Between January 2016 and March 2018, he served as a cabinet minister in the Weatherill Government in a wide range of portfolios including police, correctional services, emergency services, road safety, health, and mental health and substance abuse .

Peter become a member of the Lower House at the 2018 election when he won the seat of Croydon. He became of the Leader of the Opposition in April 2018.

South Australia is known as the small business state. Peter will address how the policies of a Labor Government, if elected, will support this sector to prosper and grow in the coming years.
