The music of the early seventeenth-century madrigal brought new life and meaning to music. Filled with texts and harmonies both punishing and thrilling, heart-rending and consoling, Monteverdi's madrigals remind us of the depth of a form that went far beyond the 'hey-nonny nonnies' of bygone eras.
