Communicating About Heatwaves: Research and Implications for Practice
The School of Public Health at The University of Adelaide is pleased to invite you to our Natural Disaster Resilience Program (NDRP) study workshop on public heatwave communication.
To date, no Australian research has investigated how the public receives and makes sense of heatwave messaging. This workshop represents a unique opportunity to engage with this research and join others in constructive discussion on South Australia’s heatwave communication strategy.
The workshop will explore and initiate discussion on important communication questions, leading to the enhancement of heatwave communication practice.
- How is current heatwave messaging from government agencies being received and made sense of by the public?
- What are the risk perception and communication barriers impeding public resilience to heatwaves?
- What can be done to overcome communication barriers such as ‘message fatigue’?
- What role does the media play in constructing public understandings of heatwave risk?
- What can ‘social marketing’ interventions do to promote protective behaviours in heatwaves?
- How can messages be designed to ‘cut through’ the media noise to reach different demographic groups?
