CRC CARE Workshop: Human Health Risk Assessment – the "step-by-step" Guide

This course can be used towards continuing professional development (CPD) points*

Overview: The ‘step-by-step’ guide

This two-day Human Health Risk Assessment (HHRA) workshops provides a ‘step-by-step’ guide to the HHRA process and provides information and resources to complete HHRAs in accordance with Australian recommended guidance. The workshop focuses on the technical aspects of HHRA models to reveal their mysteries and uncover the key influencing parameters that drive human health risk. An interactive forum is provided and encouraged to allow attendees to engage with the presenter and other workshop participants during group exercises and discussions. The workshop will benefit those wishing to conduct, interpret and/or review HHRAs.

Day 1: Workshop topics will include:

• Introduction: What is HHRA? HHRA step-wise framework. HHRA guidance and history.
• Step 1: Issue Identification: development of a HHRA conceptual site model
• Step 2: Hazard Assessment: key toxicology concepts for HHRA and information sources
• Step 3: Exposure Assessment: identifying exposure pathways and receptors; human exposure           assumptions; calculation of chemical exposure; exposure point concentrations
• Step 4: Risk Characterisation: calculation of risk estimates, interpretation of ‘acceptable’ risk
• Sensitivity and Uncertainty Analysis: why is this required? How is this performed?

Day 2: Workshop topics will include:

• Important toxicology concepts: background exposure; assessment of early-life exposure; what to do when toxicity information is not available
• Introduction to blood lead modelling: lead’s unique toxicology; blood-lead models
• Derivation of Site-Specific Screening Levels (SSSLs)
• Comprehensive case study: participants will be required to complete a health risk assessment based on a fictitious case study in small groups using the skills and information obtained from Day 1 of the workshop.

Who should attend
The workshop is aimed at people who have no prior experience performing HHRAs but it is assumed that attendees will have some knowledge of the contaminated site industry. The workshop should be of interest to regulators, industry professionals and consultants who are required to perform, review and interpret HHRAs.
Please note that participants planning to attend Day 2 only, will ideally have some prior risk assessment experience and/or attended the CRC CARE HHRA workshop delivered in March 2018.

Attendees are required to bring a calculator, and Day 2 attendees are also required to bring computer laptop or phone to access internet resources.

Presenter

Belinda Goldsworthy, PhD, BSc, RACTRA
Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessor with AECOM

Belinda Goldsworthy

Dr Belinda Goldsworthy has more than 15 years’ experience in the contaminated sites industry and specialises in human health risk assessments. She has extensive experience using both deterministic and probabilistic risk assessment exposure techniques to assess potential risks to human receptors for contaminated sites in Australia and internationally, including Malaysia, Singapore, India, Hong Kong, Oman, Japan, Indonesia and Pakistan. These risk assessments involved the use of current vapour intrusion assessment techniques and the derivation of site-specific target levels to guide remediation management decisions.

Belinda is approved by the NSW Environment Protection Authority to provide technical support to Accredited Contaminated Land Auditors for risk assessment projects, and is an accredited registrant of the Australian College of Toxicology and Risk Assessment.

Belinda has provided risk assessment and toxicology training to the Australian Department of Health, Department of Defence, environmental and health regulators, and industry colleagues. Her training techniques are aimed at engaging course attendees via the use of interactive lectures, group activities/discussions, pre- workshop reading materials, use of case studies, and multimedia and interactive materials.
