This is a Designing for learning with technology workshop presented by Learning Environments open to University of Melbourne staff only.

Learn about best practice design and teaching strategy for asynchronous online discussions

Asynchronous online discussions are an important learning component of blended, flipped and fully online subjects.

Well designed and integrated online discussions allow students; to construct knowledge collaboratively through purposeful interaction, time to consider and construct their posts and to receive feedback on their understanding and extension of key topics. Online discussions also allow instructors to customise classroom teaching based on their perceptions of student learning, leading to the development and reinforcement of a community of learners.

Using key literature underpinning the importance of discussions, this workshop will provide subject coordinators with a design framework and teaching strategy intended to get the best learning outcomes out of online, asynchronous discussions.

Participants will be encouraged to talk about their own experiences and will work in pairs to design a Discussion activity for one of their subject modules that aligns with an ILO and/or assessment task.

Presenter:

Dr Julian Harris, Learning Environments

Dr Julian Harris is a Senior Learning Designer with the FlexAP program and has developed and delivered university courses in face-to-face, blended and full-online contexts. He is a Cancer with Libra rising, so will be desperate for all workshop participants to get on with each other and like him too.
