We are delighted to invite you to our next Future of Cyber Security webinar hosted by the Surrey Centre for Cyber Security. The series features speakers from industry, academia and government, providing insights, opinions and expert knowledge, focusing on topics that will shape cyber security in years to come.

In the second of the series, we will be looking at Digital Democracy and Electronic Voting: Opportunities and Challenges. The session will focus on the wider implications of electronic voting including aspects such as how you make it secure, how you build confidence in its use and what happens when you are able to consult with a countrys population on a frequent basis. We will also look at the relationship to Digital Identity, the potential for digital divides to disenfranchise sections of the population and what all this means in an age of digital influence, fake news and cyber propaganda. The webinar will draw upon the IETs recently published report and Surrey Universitys Professor Steve Schneider, who chaired the IETs group which produced this report, will lead this session.

The next event will take place on Thursday 17th June, 4:00-5:30pm, and will feature expert views from:

  • Professor Steve Schneider, Director of the Surrey Centre for Cyber Security at the University of Surrey. Steve is an expert in formal methods, including Communicating Sequential Processes (CSP) and the B-Method, and computer security. Steve chaired the IET group that originated Internet Voting in the UK the issues, challenges and risks around internet voting, published in October 2020.
  • Dr Josh Benaloh, Senior Cryptographer at Microsoft Research, an Affiliate Faculty Member of the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington, and spent 17 years on the Board of Directors of the International Association for Cryptologic Research. Joshs numerous research publications in cryptography and voting have pioneered new technologies including the cast or spoil paradigm that brings voters into the election verification process with minimal burden.
  • Professor Lizzie Coles-Kemp, Professor in Information Security at Royal Holloway, University of London. Lizzie is a qualitative researcher who uses creative engagement methods to explore everyday digital practices and works with groups and communities to promote safer digital inclusion. Lizzies research specialises in public and community service design and consumption and safer digital inclusion. She is an EPSRC Fellow and also the RISCS Fellow for Digital Responsibility.

You will be able to take part in a Q&A session that follow the presentations.

Following your registration, you will receive an email shortly before the event with a link to join the webinar.

About the Surrey Centre for Cyber Security (SCCS)

The University of Surrey has been recognised by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) as one of a small number of universities to achieve the status of both an Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Research (ACE-CSR) and an Academic Centre of Excellence in Cyber Security Education (ACE-CSE).

SCCS is a key element of the Universitys digital activities, collaborating on AI research within the Computer Science Department and the Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP), and also with the 5G Innovation Centre the UKs largest academic research centre dedicated to developing next generation mobile and wireless communications. More widely, SCCS consolidates research activities in cyber security across the University, bringing together expertise within the Department of Computer Science and actively collaborating with the University's departments of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Sociology, Psychology, Law, Politics and Business to create a rich set of perspectives on cyber security.

SCCS provides education via its GCHQ-certified Information Security MSc and supervised PhD research degrees. Situated on the Surrey University campus in Guildford, the group is within easy reach of organisations in London and the South East.
