Frequently asked questions

1) Can I be placed on a waitlist if the event is at capacity?

If a session reaches set capacity, a waitlist function is available through Eventbrite. Please enrol through this function to be automatically placed in the waitlist. The waitlist will be notified when tickets to the session are released through Eventbrite as places become available.

2) What do I do if the RSVP period has ended?

Please email DPRinstitutions@dss.gov.au and the team will manually register you if possible.

3) What do I do if I am no longer able to make the session?

You are able to cancel your ticket in a number of ways: through Eventbrite, declining the calendar invite via email, or contacting DPRinstitutions@dss.gov.au to request that the team cancel your ticket.

4) The location is set as to be confirmed, when will this be updated?

To increase capacity, the DPR immersion sessions may be hosted externally. As soon as practicable an email will be sent to all attendees once the location is confirmed.

Dear all,

Some attendees to the upcoming DPR Immersion sessions have indicated they cannot or are unlikely to be able to attend because of the current issues surrounding COVID 19. This makes it challenging for us go ahead with the sessions, given uncertain/reduced numbers.

As such, we have decided to postpone these sessions to a later date. We are working to find alternative dates or ways to deliver the session, such as online, and we will be in contact with you as soon as possible.

Should you need support or information from us in the interim, particularly if you receive a notification indicating DPR, we are available to talk you through the process and provide what support we can. Please contact us via the following email address: DPRinstitutions@dss.gov.au

An introduction to direct personal response (DPR) under the National Redress Scheme

You are invited to attend an information session on direct personal response (DPR), one of the three elements of redress available under the National Redress Scheme for institutional child sexual abuse (the Scheme). This session will not cover operational aspects of the Scheme more broadly.

What is DPR?

A key recommendation of the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse was for survivors to have access to a DPR in recognition of their need for healing and justice.

Under the Scheme, a DPR is an opportunity for a survivor to engage, after careful preparation, with a representative from the institution responsible for their abuse. DPR can involve the survivor sharing their experience and its impacts on them, at the time and now, to the extent they wish to do so. The institution’s role is to listen, hear and acknowledge the survivor’s experiences and demonstrate accountability through the provision of genuine apology and assurances of the efforts being made by the institution to prevent this in the future.

About the session

The DPR ‘immersion’ session will be delivered by the DPR Section of the Redress Implementation Branch. It provides an introduction and overview of DPR under the Scheme, including:

1) an explanation of the legislative requirements

2) principles for the safe and effective implementation of DPR processes (including trauma-informed care and practice)

3) the key skills and attributes required of an institutional representative

4) a role-play demonstration of a DPR

5) the ‘process’ of apology, and

6) an opportunity for addressing queries.

This training is suitable for any staff involved in the development of their institution’s DPR policies and processes, or staff who will be engaging in DPR with survivors as an institutional representative.
