VARÈSE
Octandre, for eight instruments
MATTHIAS PINTSCHER
Bereshit, for ensemble
Beyond (A System of Passing), for solo flute
PIERRE BOULEZ
Sur Incises, for three pianos, three harps, and three percussion
Nearly 40 years after it was founded by Pierre Boulez, the revered Ensemble Intercontemporain is still the benchmark for excellence for new music ensembles the world over. Under the artistic direction of composer Matthias Pintscher, the 31-member ensemble lends its "bracing expertise" (The Guardian, London) to two programs of 20th-century gems, from intimate solo and duo compositions to Pintscher's exploration of Genesis, Bereshit. Berkeley faculty member Edmund Campion premieres a new work with live video, and founding father Boulez is represented with Sur Incises, his magnificent reimagining of his solo piano piece Incises, for three concurrent trios of piano, harp, and percussion.
