Workshop Descriptor:

“Children learn as they play. Most importantly, in play children learn how to learn.” -O. Fred Donaldson (Pulitzer nominated author, and renowned play researcher)

Play is crucial in the development of learners. Just as the child should be at the heart of our learning communities, play should be at the center of our pedagogy.

Throughout this workshop we will unpack our own understandings of our image of the child and the beliefs and values that drive us, culminating with the articulation of the ‘why’ behind the intentional choices we make as educators in order to foster play and creativity in the classroom.

We will explore the concept of play and define what we really mean when we talk about play; what it means to us as individuals, as members of our learning communities and, most importantly, what it means to our students. We will look at the importance of the learning environment and the critical role it plays in promoting learning and learner agency. We will round out the workshop by exploring the ‘how to’ behind creating and developing authentic play opportunities that provide us with a window of understanding into how children think, explore, and create as they learn. So grab some materials, it’s time to PLAY!

Participants will:

  • Define play for themselves within the contexts they are learning and teaching within

  • Deepen their understanding of play and how it can seamlessly be integrated into existing constructs of learning and teaching

  • Reflect on their own learning environments to best meet the needs of their learners

  • Explore the possibilities of materials in an intentional learning environment to foster opportunities for play, while providing a context for learner agency to grow and thrive

  • Set realistic next steps for a pedagogy of play in their own context and articulate this to colleagues, administrators and parents

Audience:

This workshop is suitable for Early Years/Primary School Teachers and School Administrators looking to enhance, create and explore playful learning opportunities within their learning communities.
