Sailing has a 182 year history at the Royal Hobart Regatta, being one of the inaugural events in 1838. The magnificent trading ketches featured prominently for more than 60 years, and from the 1880s the 28 footers such as Clutha, Volant, America, Caress, Ailsa and Fairlie competed for significant prizemoney.

In 1915 Sir Thomas Lipton donated a magnificent trophy for the One-Design Class, which by 1925 had led to the establishment of A Class - legendary yachts Weene, Alwyn, Grayling, Yeulba, Ozone, Ninie and Vanity dominated the Lipton Cup until the 1940s.

Many of Tasmania's most famous yachts have won this prestigios event over the years.
