Learn to Paint and Draw Portraits with Marie Mansfield
Course overview
This painting class is for students who want to learn how to paint portraits. In this class, through a series of exerices, you will learn the skills required to produce accurate and meaningful portraits. Throughout the planned exercises, Marie works with each student at his/her own level, and works to progress each student’s ambitions. Students will benefit from doing tonal studies and colour mixing, and will cater for students who wish to improve their painting skills using their choice of medium. While Marie’s primary interest is oil painting, acrylic painters and watercolour painters will also benefit from this course.
This class is for students with prior experience in their chosen medium.

Materials
Art materials are not included in the course fee. Students will need to bring the following:
Surfaces: Canvas board or stretch canvas for oils (acrylic primed).
Brushes: bring a selection of brushes that you normally use, for oils a ‘Long flat’ is best.
Palette and palette knife (long flexible knife with a tapered tip).
Paper towels or rags.
Paint: The following are the recommended colour palette for portraiture. Vermillion Red or cadmium red, Ivory black Titanium or Zinc White, Burnt sienna. Yellow ochre. Also recommended are Lemon Yellow and Alizarine Crimson.
Drawing materials Optional: Bring charcoal along with some cartridge paper (A3 suggested) for sketches and practice.
Students are welcome to bring other paint colours you may already own. For better results, we recommend buying ‘artist quality’ paints.

Art Est. Art School is located in a light industrial estate at 67-69 Lords Road, Leichhardt. We have two venues: the main studios are in Unit 4 where painting, drawing and printmaking classes are held. The ceramics studio (clay work and pottery) is located in Unit 9, the first building on the right as you arrive. Art Est. student parking is the spaces directly outside Units 4 and 9. General visitor parking is also available opposite Unit 4 (under the trees). Tandem parking is in operation in the visitor parking, so please leave a note on your car if you park someone in for any length of time. There is plenty of unmetered on-street parking available.
It is important to remind you to only park in the signposted Art Est. spaces OR the general visitor parking. Please do not park in front of any other tenant’s premises. This includes loading dock next door as this is in use 24 hours/7 days by our neighbours.
