Arts Northern Rivers and the Northern Rivers Conservatorium have commissioned music educator Karen Kyriakou to deliver two music workshops for the Northern Rivers Deaf Community and music teachers.

Facilitated by Karen Kyriakou, the program will explore models of working with both Deaf and hearing participants through two workshops targeting professional development for educators and a practical workshop for Deaf or hard of hearing students.

This professional development session is an opportunity for music educators exploring the idea of music education for Deaf or hard of hearing students. The workshops will focus on exploring music making using visual and tactile approaches including activities covering rhythm, melody, body percussion and music literacy. Participants from the region’s musical educators will be guided through why learning music is important for all children, and also the unique considerations of working with Deaf children; communication needs and working with interpreters. Most importantly, the emphasis of the session focuses on making music lessons and activities inclusive for all participants.
