DEBUSSY: Jeux
PROKOFIEV: Piano Concerto No. 3
STRAVINSKY: The Rite of Spring
Beloved maestro and former Berkeley Symphony music director Kent Nagano leads the Montreal Symphony Orchestra in a dynamic program of early 20th-century works, including Debussy's sprightly Jeux and Stravinsky's towering The Rite of Spring, composed within a year of each other for Sergei Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. Pianist Daniil Trifonov joins the full-bodied orchestra for Prokofiev's emotionally expansive third piano concerto, a work he has performed to acclaim: "he offered far more than mere virtuosity ... Trifonov demonstrated an elegant touch and witty grace in more lighthearted moments and poetic insight in more introspective passages" (The New York Times).
