Please note: Course Fee Applies.  Chainsaws are one of the most useful as well as dangerous tools a worker can use. This course is designed to educate personnel who use a chainsaw about safety, maintenance, use and handling. Participants will gain an understanding in what contributes to accidents and how to avoid them, hands-on and practical work planning strategies, understanding compression and tension and cross-cutting fallen timber. Developing skills that reduce variables and mitigate risks associated with chainsaws and cutting techniques is the general theme of this course. The unit of competency (AHCARB205A) is part of the Arboriculture training package and can contribute to future qualifications. This course also covers selecting, using, maintaining and store suitable personal protective equipment; carrying out routine checks and maintenance on chainsaw; applying appropriate chainsaw technique and cutting methods to meet and exceed low risk work procedures; assessing and minimising environmental impacts of chainsaw use; maintaining records of chainsaw training and conducting effective risk assessments on the worksite. To pass the course and to receive a certificate of competency, you must be deemed competent in theory and practical elements. We have a duty of care to our students — if a student is unable to use a chainsaw properly and cannot understand the theory material, then we must fail them. If you fail the course, then there will be no certificate issued and you will need to return on another day and speak with one of our trainers about further instruction and assessment. Do I need a Chainsaw Licence to operate a chainsaw? Training is not required by law however your workplace health and safety regulator will prosecute anyone using a chainsaw for work without the proper training and prescribed PPE. There are also other relevant considerations such as inspections for equipment safety, and contractual obligations if you on a worksite. Y our workplace health and safety regulator  will prosecute for any or all of these. In addition, employers and employees have a duty of care to others and themselves. An employer or worker only needs to take a look at the fines issued by  workplace health and safety regulators . Logically they are far greater than training costs and many prosecutions carry a criminal record. Even a person starting with a small bar chainsaw requires initial instruction, training and supervision, and a sound knowledge of basic maintenance and safe work procedures. Where can I do it? Who should I choose to train me? Always choose an established company and preferably one that is able to offer facilities for you to train in. There are some companies that don’t have their own site and you can find yourself travelling some distance to get to site each day; this will eat in to your training time. Course Requirements Trained Up provides PPE, Chainsaws and associated equipment. All candidates are required to wear steel toe cap boots to the training days Method of Training Practical, demonstrations, instructions and theory at our Artarmon training centre. Day 2 takes place at out Lane Cove training yard. Method of Assessment Theory and practical assessment Refresher/Update Recommended every 12-18 months
