This six part course will present the core principles of organic gardening including soil building, creating a food forest, plant selection, pest and disease management and garden maintenance. Participants will gain practical skills such as pruning, composting/worm farming, sheet mulching, propagating and planting. This comprehensive course will equip participants with the knowledge and confidence to grow food and other plants locally using organic methods, and the skills and techniques to create a food forest.

The course is free and will run on Thursday mornings (9am-12pm) from 5 March to 9 April at Whites Creek Cottage and Whites Creek Valley Park Food Forest.

Course outline:

Week 1 (5 March): Introduction to the benefits of organic gardening and the principles of permaculture. Includes a tour of the site.

Week 2 (12 March): Understanding soils and how to build them. Includes practical exercises in compost/worm farming and sheet mulching.

Week 3 (19 March): Creating a food forest, including layers, guilds and planting an understory.

Week 4 (26 March): Plant selection and identification, seed saving and propagation from seeds, divisions and cuttings.

Week 5 (2 April): Natural pest management, including companion planting and crop rotation.

Week 6 (9 April): How to maintain a healthy, dynamic organic garden, including feeding, mulching, watering and pruning.

The course will be facilitated by Emma Daniell and Steve Batley. Emma is the Senior Engagement Officer at the Green Living Centre and has a background in horticulture, permaculture and urban food growing. Steve is the director of Sydney Organic Gardens, and is a landscape architect, permaculture designer, and organic gardener.

The course will take place in the only food forest in the Inner West. A layered, permaculture food forest, Whites Creek Valley Park Food Forest is managed by Friends of Whites Creek Valley Park. It provides habitat for local wildlife and produces organic food that the community can share and enjoy. Volunteers are welcome and the food forest is accessible to the public during the day.

Please bring a notepad and pen, a hat, water and closed-toe shoes.

It is preferable that you attend all six weeks of the course. If you are unable to attend all weeks please email education@greenlivingcentre.org.au or phone 0466 428 063 to discuss.

This course is being held by the Green Living Centre, an initiative of Inner West Council. Entry is free for residents of the Inner West Council area. If you are not from the Inner West Council area please email education@greenlivingcentre.org.au to be put on a waitlist.
