The Government of South Australia recognises the importance of an Active State, and holds the belief that sport and active recreation develops stronger, healthier, happier and safer communities.

Sport and recreation helps to build communities through social inclusion and a sense of connection, helps build families through shared experiences and shared achievements and can help address antisocial behaviour and support education. Sport and recreation is not the cure-all for society’s issues, but with quality delivery and an appropriate level of support, it can assist in a positive way socially, economically and environmentally.

The Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing (ORSR) is the lead agency for the South Australian Government’s policy on sport and active recreation. ORSR supports sport and recreation through the development of policy, programs and resources, the provision of funding, recreation and sport planning, infrastructure development, elite sport pathways and programs, and the promotion of physical activity.

The ORSR is actively seeking deeper collaboration with the community on three projects which were identified as key priorities for the 2017-2021 Strategic Plan cycle.

The three priority projects are;

  • Game On, Getting South Australia Active
  • The South Australian Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Plan; and
  • The Grants Review.

As an initial stage, we are undertaking a comprehensive and coordinated engagement process to gather input for all three of these projects, as they are closely aligned and will deliver outcomes that address whole of government and department objectives.

The Game On project will prioritise and explore a handful of key issues relevant to the sport and recreation industry and provide a platform for shared understanding and focused collaboration across the industry and across government.

The South Australian Sport and Recreation Infrastructure Plan will identify the future sport and recreation infrastructure needs, and a framework for prioritising and progressing projects.

The Grants Review will identify how we can maximise the impact of ORSR funding to support the delivery of quality sport and recreation experiences that are accessible for all South Australians.

The 2 month consultation for these projects will be extensive – through surveys, written submissions, interviews and interactive workshops and forums to be held across the state. We want to gather as much input as possible to ensure the community can contribute to these three projects and influence how South Australia is an active state.
