Open Monday through Friday, the Outdoor Recreation Center serves as the check-out point for equipment rentals, famcamp, the picnic area, skeet and trap range, swimming pool, RV storage lot, outdoor recreation programs and trips and tours. We are also the hotspot for guided tours and great discount trips like cruises, biking, hiking, racing, football games and a whole slew of great, outdoor fun. Charleston's Outdoor Recreation Center has everything a family needs to have fun and adventure outside. Providing a wide variety of equipment rentals and tickets and travel. Trips, Treks and Travels. The ORC can take individuals or the entire family on a cruise or canoe trip, swimming with the manatees, rock climbing, camping, biking, scuba diving, or on a getaway excursion to Key West, Florida. Outdoor Recreation offers a full PADI certified scuba program, with classes, trips and equipment available for rental or retail. Winter sports enthusiasts will find what they are looking for at the Center's Ski Shop, which offers ski and snowboard rentals and maintenance. Trips to North Carolina are offered two times a week during the winter months. In addition to these in-house programs, the center is responsible for the FAMCAMP, picnic area, skeet and trap range and base swimming pool. The Joint Base Charleston-AB Campground has 43 RV and 6 tent campsites, which are rented on a daily basis. All sites have water and electricity, and patrons have access to restrooms, showers and a dump station. The base pool offers individual and family passes, and swimming lessons. The center relies heavily on volunteers to keep its programs going. The Skeet and Trap range has remained open and profitable because it is run entirely by volunteers. The ORC initiated a program to train volunteers to assist in canoe, SCUBA climbing and kayaking trips, as well as sightseeing tours. Training includes risk management, pre-trip planning, skill development in activity and "how to run the perfect program." Because of their in-depth expertise, the staff at the center is frequently asked for advice by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources, Women's Outdoor Workshops, and area Boys and Girls Scouts.
