Develop and refine your understanding of the visual language of painting, and build confidence in your own practice.
Tonee Messiah guides you in how to choose meaningful subject matter and translate it into imagery while understanding how to decide on appropriate styles for rendering your paintings in colour. You will be guided through a series of exercises that introduce the basic principles intrinsic to painting, including style, colour mixing and application, and idea development.
Tonee leads group discussions and demonstrates how to identify students’ individual areas of interest and to translate them into content for artworks. She also introduces expressive painting techniques, abstraction and colour as powerful, emotive tools and ways of translating narrative into visual language. The initial exercises will be set in either acrylic or oil paints, yet students can add mixed media as the course progresses.
Tonee gives individual tuition to assist students with deciphering their initial ideas and developing compositions, and instructions on applying techniques to develop a suite of finished paintings.
Tonee Messiah’s painting practice has evolved over 15 years from representational to abstract. She is motivated by the subtleties of the human condition, finding imagery that speaks of the tensions present in modern life and the undulations of human relationships. Having started her professional practice using acrylics, she now paints predominantly in oils, and her works on paper use a vast combination of water-based media.
Tonee has been a finalist in the Hazelhurst Art on Paper Award, the Paddington Art Prize and the ABN AMRO Art Award. She has exhibited throughout Australia and internationally, and her work is held in Artbank, the Monash University Museum of Art, and many corporate and private collections. She is represented by Gallery 9, Sydney.
