Pottery Wheel Throwing Beginners and Beyond | Term Class
Course overview
Our pottery wheel throwing classes are for students new to ceramics as well as those with prior experience. Students will learn to use the pottery wheel in a supportive and encouraging atmosphere, build on skills week by week, work on problem areas and much more. Our term pottery wheel classes are available weekdays, evenings and on Saturday mornings.
What to expect
Students will learn through demonstration and practice.
Beginners will learn fundamentals of pottery wheel throwing: preparing clay, centering clay on the wheel, turning or trimming, building on skills week by week.
Students will learn about and practice making functional objects, such as vases, cups, bowls, jugs, saucers etc.
Continuing students or those with experience elsewhere will build on their skills, work on problem areas, learn new techniques and begin to develop their own projects based on their particular interests.
All students will be introduced to a range of decorative techniques for their objects, learn about glazing and finishing.
Our pottery wheel tutors
Greg Crowe, Tanya Bechara, Denise McDonald and Shinhee Ma are all practising ceramicists who specialise in wheel throwing. They each have many years tutoring and mentoring beginners to experienced potters to develop their skills, design and approaches to making.
See our full program of ceramics and pottery classes
There is a maximum of 8 students in our pottery wheel classes class.
About our Ceramics studio
Our professionally managed and purpose built pottery and ceramics studio is equipped with 8 pottery wheels (Venco), dedicated handbuilding stations, slab roller, extruder, pugmill, glaze and kiln rooms. The studio has 3 kilns and all firing occurs on the premises. A good selection of glazes are available for student use. We recycle clay and use this as much as possible in student projects.
Is this course right for me?
This new course is for students with little or no experience working with clay, and those with prior experience.
What should I wear?
Wear closed-toe shoes and comfortable clothes you are relaxed about getting clay on.
Bring an apron.
We also recommend you trim your nails first (no guarantees that your manicure will last when working with clay!)
What should I bring?
A notebook to take notes and sketch your ideas
Roll of masking tape
Marker pen
Reference images if you like
A sponge
An old hand towel
A few plastic garbage bags to wrap your clay artworks to keep them from drying out as you work on them from week to week.
A plastic storage container with a lid is useful to keep your materials together (about 40cmx30cmx15cm high) (eg from Ikea, officeworks or a discount shop)
What materials will be provided?
Included in the course fee is use of clay and basic glazes.
Pottery tool sets are available for purchase at $15.
Will my vessels be fired?
Kiln firing of several finished pieces throughout the term is included in the course fee. Students wishing to fire lots of pieces or excessively large works will need to discuss this with their tutor and additional charges will apply. Works made outside of Art Est. studios are not able to be fired in our kiln.
Wheel throwing classes have a maximum of 8 students
Our class sizes are small, ensuring you receive the individual tuition you need. For most ceramics classes clay is supplied to complete several projects and this is
included
in your course fees. Additional clay can be purchased if required.

The ceramics studio (clay work and pottery) is located in Unit 9, the first building on the right as you arrive. Art Est. student parking is the spaces directly outside Units 4 and 9. General visitor parking is also available opposite Unit 4 (under the trees). Tandem parking is in operation in the visitor parking, so please leave a note on your car if you park someone in for any length of time. There is plenty of unmetered on-street parking available.
It is important to remind you to only park in the signposted Art Est. spaces OR the general visitor parking. Please do not park in front of any other tenant’s premises. This includes loading dock next door as this is in use 24 hours/7 days by our neighbours.
