As part of the Sharing the Stories of Australian Muslims project, the Race Discrimination Commissioner & Team would like to invite you to our Speaker Series Event: The rise of Cyber Racism with guest speakers Professor Kevin Dunn (Western Sydney University) and Professor Andrew Jakubowicz (University of Technology Sydney).
The internet has changed the ways in which people communicate, enabling ideas and images to spread quickly between large numbers of people all over the world.
While this increased freedom of information-sharing has usually been used in a positive way, in some cases it has also been used to disseminate content that is offensive, threatening, violent and abusive. In fact, internationally, the number of internet and social-networking sites devoted to racism, hate and militancy has been found to be on the increase.
During the Race Discrimination Commissioner’s national consultations with the Australian Muslim community, concerns about the increase in cyber racism has been a key theme.
Community members noted that the Muslim community was often used as click bait by online media outlets who are targeting sections of the Australian public.
This negative narrative is then propagated through social media echo chambers and, as recent incidents have demonstrated, increasingly manifesting in real life.
