Design talks

Futures-Centered Design - What does the future need from us?

Lisa Kay Solomon, July 23, 17.00 CET, duration 1.5 hours

If the pandemic has taught us anything, it's that the future isnt pre-determined, but a wider range of possible futures that we can and should explore and shape. Thats why we need to become more observant and attuned to highly important and uncertain trends that will meaningfully interact and change the broader context in ways, beyond our direct control.

How to make more thoughtful choices? How to balance creativity and critical thinking? And how to lead and promote creative confidence in a world that promises to be even more ambiguous and complex?

Lisa Kay Solomon

is a Designer in Residence at the Stanford Universitys Institute for Design (aka d.school') where she teaches classes on imagining, debating and analysing the future. She was named one of ixDAs Women of Design 2020, and a bestselling author of the books 'Moments of Impact and 'Design a Better Business.

Social innovation - How to meet societal needs in a better way?

André Schaminée, July 29, 17.00 CET, duration 1.5 hours

Many contemporary societal issues have grown to be too complex to solve with traditional solutions. The current pandemic crisis is just one of the many examples. Crises bring people, groups and communities together. They force organisations to anticipate and innovate rapidly and offer solutions for new and evolving social situations. But what is the longterm result?

Topics like food, climate, mobility and energy are becoming high on the agendas of organisations in the search to contribute to systemic change. In many projects designers are involved. But how often does our work actually succeed in changing the workflow and mindset of organisations? What can we learn from public institutions? What if we look at design from a change management perspective?

André Schaminée

is organisational consultant at TwynstaGudde, one of the Dutch leading consultancy firms. He is a pioneer in the field of design and author of the book 'Designing With and Within Public Organisations'. Working at one of the Dutch leading consultancy firms, he has built a business in successfully bringing design strategies to public organisations.

Note: the ticket for this talk includes a free paperback copy of André's book: 'Designing With-in Public Organizations - Building Bridges Between Public Sector Innovators and Designers'. The normal price for this book is EUR 35.00 and well pay shipping & handling.

Strategic Design for Services

Majid Iqbal, July 24, 10.00 CET, duration 2.5 hours

Strategic design translates game-changing decisions into clear, concise, and complete instructions for execution in terms of the who, why, how, what, when and where. Encoding the decisions into a shared script, helps functions and disciplines, including design, to collaborate on implementation, while avoiding systemic failures due gaps and conflicts due to differences in their ways of thinking.

This masterclass exposes you to two basic building blocks of strategic design for services: promises and patterns, with examples from live projects in healthcare and government. There will be one hands-on exercise to get a feel for a new practice. At the very least you'll walk away with a keener sense of what the design of a service looks like to the mind of a strategist.

Majid Iqbal

is an expert on policy, strategy, and design. As an advisor at the Dutch Ministry of Economic Affairs and Climate he co-founded a special unit called XLAB; developing new approaches to complex problems and methods for visualizing systems, services, and transitions. After Carnegie Mellon, Gartner, and PwC, he has been on a mission to bring more clarity to the concept of a service, as it relates to implementing policy or strategy.

Note: the ticket for this masterclass includes a free paperback copy of Majid's book 'Thinking in Services - Encoding and Expressing Strategy through Design'. The normal price for this book is EUR 35.00 and well pay shipping & handling.
