When it comes to the power sector, what is most important to us? The reliability of our electricity? The cost? The impact on the environment? Are we willing to compromise in any of these areas?

With the growing threat of climate change, there has been a push towards decarbonisation in recent years. But there are significant challenges to achieving this.

What is SENergy?

SENergy is a student-based forum that aims to gather multiple diverse student groups to discuss the technical, environmental, social and economic issues surrounding an energy issue.

What are we doing this year?

This year's panel will feature five diverse student societies:

  • Society of Petroleum Engineers UQ Chapter (SPE UQ)
  • Fossil Free UQ (FFUQ)
  • UQ Politics, Philosophy and Economics Society (PPE)
  • UQ South Pacific Islanders Association (SPIA)
  • Engineers Without Borders UQ Chapter (EWB UQ)

Our topic will be the implications/challenges of the decarbonisation of Australia’s power generation. From their own perspectives and biases, each student society will be addressing this primary question:

“There is a noticeable shift in Australia’s Power Generation mix towards more renewable energy sources. However, there are various technical, economic, political and behavioural challenges associated with this shift. With the COP21 agreement as a benchmark, can Australia transition as quickly as we need to?”
