What is a hedge fund?
A hedge fund is holding a portfolio of positions such as stocks, corporate bonds, futures, options, currencies etc. What is characteristic for a hedge fund is that it can use both long and short positions* to be market neutral. This means that the hedge fund is not so much affected to by market movements and that it is the investment strategy of the hedge fund that generates performance.
Alpha is an important measure of performance since it takes into account the market neutrality of the hedge fund. Alpha is interpreted as the return of the investment strategy. Some hedge funds have a more concentrated portfolio then others, they may invest in one or several sectors. Hedge funds may use leverage. Leverage increases both the return and the risk of a hedge fund.
*Short position means that you speculate on an individual issuer (company) or market going downwards.
