Let the glorious sound of the Sydney Town Hall grand organ and Sydney Symphony brass envelop you in a morning of sumptuous music.
Organ and brass are a match made in heaven for composers from the Baroque to the 19th Century, who called upon the combination for sacred occasions and secular celebrations.
Virtuoso David Drury plays the Town Hall’s 1890 organ – the largest in the world when it was commissioned. With 9,000 pipes, 5 manual keyboards (and pedals), and gilded detailing it is spectacular in every sense. It’s the perfect complement for the Sydney Symphony Brass and stirring music by Clarke and Gabrieli.
At around the time the Town Hall organ was built, performers in France were harnessing new technology for incredible timbres and aural effects. In this still-thriving tradition, organists like Gigout and Vierne wrote bold works to show off those thousands of pipes and, in these arrangements, the brazen might of brass ensemble.
