Understanding Density
Area of Interest: Architecture & Planning
Course Details: The limits to density are at the heart of every urban project, every architectural design, every property investment and every assessment of sustainability. No matter the social and environmental signficance of the project, the brilliance of its design, its profitability, or the level of innovation, its density is always measured, always negotiated and (nearly always) maximised. This short course will sharpen your concepts of urban density, offer precise terminology, explore the policy implications of density at various urban scales, develop models for urban form at relevant densities, and teach you how to translate density standards into physical forms, and vice versa.
Delivery and assessment: Face-to-face delivery at UNSW Sydney including lectures, discussions, workshops and a group assignment.
Skills: By the end of this course you will be able to:

acquire knowledge of urban density in theory and practice with respect to how it is defined, how it is measured, and how valid comparisons can be made concerning densities in Sydney and other global cities

develop your understanding on how density controls translate into the physical form of urban precincts

develop your ability to communicate the understanding and assessment of urban density measures to other professionals and the community on the basis of clear definitions and valid data

develop your ability to advance the awareness of urban density based on the need to achieve good design outcomes at neighbourhood scale in the context of community expectations and the role of Sydney as a global city.
