Redlining and related policies from the New Deal and Postwar Eras still impact our world and our work in more ways than we imagine. In fact, at the root of many issues like housing, education and policing we find the the long reach of Jim Crow structural racism.

Join Designing the We for a new conversation on how Undesigning the Redline and contextualizing the work we do in the Bronx, New York City, and beyond opens alternative models, collaborations, and processes where another reality is possible. Check out the interactive exhibit and participate in new conversations, both one-on-one and in small groups.

From Gregory Jost: Come celebrate the completion of nearly 16 years at UNHP and wish me well on what’s next! Instead of buying me a beer at a bar, we will have a keg of a local delicious brew, some decent wine, and some light snacks at this event. I’ll have a jar for donations to cover the costs!

I was here today and although the Redlining portion was well done, I can't support this show. How are you going to use a building and borough destroyed by cuts to civic services without addressing ongoing gentrification and displacement? Art is not innocent and arts organizations are a huge part of gentrification. Already Mott Haven, Morrisania and the Port Morris/138 area are undergoing rent hikes and massive shifts, with the accompanying art spaces, artists' lofts, and galleries that accompany and often pre-date such shifts. Yes, the exhibition included native Bronx artists and school children and did outreach to the community, but is that enough when these institutions and shows aren't accessible to those without an arts education? When they are both a sign of gentrification and a draw to those from outside the community? Only 5 people on your team, board, and intern staff are people of color and who knows if any are from the Bronx. Education and accessibility are not the same thing as community control. It would have been much more interesting if THE COMMUNITY, aka poor black and latino families and residents, were asked what THEY wanted to use the space for and if THEY were in charge of designing, executing, and running the show. If they were given the money and support, this exhibition would have actually reflected the community and been truly empowering. Unfortunately, this exhibtion is NOT really about empowerment

This is exactly the work that designing the WE is gearing up to do. I agree with you about some of the unfortunate circumstances with the building and the dynamics of how the larger exhibit got created. Let's add this to the topics to cover on our forthcoming conversation.

I know Katherine just wanted to lighten the moment. I honestly thought the event would be mush wider. You can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink water.

This is incredibly devastating. I grew up near Lincoln Park in the 1970s and 1980s.

This is so cool and I would honestly love to go, but I have work at 4:00pm on the dot. So the next unveiling April De Simone I am totally there, and I can cover it for my news publication. As a matter of fact, if you want to meet up afterwards for a sit down and talk about it? I would still love to cover this event.
