Wild Island presents Wild Minds - a series of 7 cutting edge presentations and conversations that explore Country, nature, wildness and people from a range of perspectives – Indigenous, activist, philosophical, scientific, artistic, literary, political and spiritual.
Unprecedented habitat loss, global pollution and climate crises threaten the natural, cultural and social integrity of Tasmania and the planet. Wild Minds will offer an important space to explore ideas and visions for Tasmania and to move towards effective action for the Earth.
Come to one or come to all 7! All are welcome.

#1 RUTH LANGFORD, MARTIN HAWES
Country and wilderness, Indigenous and experiential perspectives
July 24, 7:30pm – 9:00pm
Ruth Langford’s vision of connecting people to the ancient wisdom of Indigenous teachings and Martin Hawes' 50 years exploring wilderness come together in a fascinating exploration of humanity and our place in nature.

#2 GREG JORDAN, ROB BLAKERS
Tasmanian Gondwana
August 7, 7:30pm - 9:00pm
Associate Professor Greg Jordan will outline how our understanding of Gondwanan vegetation has changed over the last decade. Long term photographer and activist, Rob Blakers, will present a portfolio of Tasmania’s incredible green dinosaurs and offer a fighting perspective for a planet that is shifting beneath our feet.

#3 MILLIE MOONEY, JESSICA ROBBINS
Saving the Earth, next steps!
August 21, 7:30pm - 9:00pm
Millie Rooney (National Coordinator for Australia ReMADE) and Jessica Robbins (project officer for the Restore Pedder campaign) will ask us to imagine waking up in the world of our dreams and what it might look like to create a collective Yes! for positive action. They will also talk about the opportunity for Tasmania to be a global leader in sustainability.

#4 JON BRYAN
Diving deep and rising up against the rise of urchin barrens
September 11, 7:30pm - 9:00pm
Jon Bryan is a marine biologist with over 4000 dives for research and photography, including deep technical dives using closed circuit re-breathers and exotic gases.
Jon will compare Tasmanian marine environments to other parts of the world, describe some of Tasmania's marine life and underwater habitats, and talk about shifting baselines, over fishing and urchin barrens.

Collaboration for a cause - The making of advocacy films
October 2, 7:30pm - 9:00pm
Catherine Pettman and Matthew Newton head up Rummin Productions, a Tasmanian based film and digital media production company specialising in cinematic documentary, narrative video and digital media projects.

#6 BEN WALTER, JANE RAWSON
Should we be writing books when the world is about to end?
October 23, 7:30pm - 9:00pm
Jane Rawson is a former editor of the environment and energy section of The Conversation and author of ‘The Handbook: surviving and living with climate change’.
Ben Walter is a Tasmanian writer of lyrical, Un-Australian fiction and one of the nation’s most widely published writers of short stories.

#7 CHRIS BELL
Wilderness and photography
November 13, 7:30pm - 9:00pm
Chris Bell is Australia’s finest living landscape photographer.
Chris will talk about wilderness, its importance and its inspirational capacity. He will talk about the role of early photographers in raising awareness of the importance of protecting wild landscapes and 'where we are now' in terms of how our concern and our actions will determine its future – and our future.
