Queensland Writers Centre Proudly Presents :

Nick Earls, Vicki Englund, Dave Lowe and Evelyn Saunders

Join four of Queensland’s adaptable/adapted/adapting writers – Nick Earls, Vicki Englund, Dave Lowe and Evelyn Saunders, as they chat with panel moderator, Brisbane producer/director Laura Clelland, about the highs and not-so-highs of adaptation.

Nick has had five novels adapted for the stage and two for screen, while Vicki optioned Catherine Bateson’s YA novel Painted Love Letters and adapted it for the screen as well as being commissioned to adapt two other works. Dave is a children’s author and recently completed an adaptation for the stage of Andy Griffith’s novel, ‘The Day My Bum Went Psycho’. Evelyn has lectured at AFTRS and wrote a retelling of Hansel & Gretel as part of Screen Qld’s ‘Re Told’ initiative.

Whether you’re looking to have your work adapted or just curious to hear about our writers’ experiences, we’re sure everyone will enjoy the stories from our panel and a Q&A at the end.

Screen Queensland Proudly Presents :

Kerrin McNeil (Hoodlum), Chris Kunz (Matchbox Pictures)

Nat Lindwall (Executive Producer at Fremantle Media), hosted by Tracey Vieira (CEO, Screen Queensland)

When it comes to adaptation, it's important to remember that books and films represent two different forms of storytelling.

The role of the filmmaker is to make a great film. So how does the producer navigate the delicate balance of remaining faithful to the source material knowing how literature and film each have their own creative structure?

Our panellists will discuss their personal experiences through the scripted development process - sharing case studies, stories and insights on how they have successfully maintained the spirit of the story moving from page to screen.
