Details on each event as below:

New Zealand Latte Art Championship Workshop 2020, 6pm - 9pm

The workshop is designed for anyone wanting to compete or coach in the New Zealand Latte Art Championship. We will breakdown the scoring categories so you can best prepare yourself to compete, referencing the Rules & Regulations documents from the World Coffee Event. This is not a hands-on workshop, we will not be teaching you how to pour latte art. It is a rules-based event, lecture and power-point presentation with Q&A.

As part of the workshop, we will send out a pre-test to those attending to start you thinking in terms of the rules within the Championship.

Come along and learn how to understand the rules and get the best out of your competition experience. All welcome.

Workshop outline

This year’s workshop will cover the basic elements of scoring the Championships. The focus will be on sensory more than any other element.

Remember to read and review the new Rules and Regulations prior to the workshop.

You will be sent a link to an online written assessment prior to the workshop, and it is essential that this is completed prior to the workshop. The written assessment includes coffee knowledge and rules based questions.

This workshop is a minimum prerequisite for all NZ Barista Championship Judges,  NO matter if you have judged prior or not. Note: Those judges that have judged the last two years consecutively please use the discounted workshop rate.

Meadow Fresh New Zealand Latte Art Championship 2020

The Meadow Fresh New Zealand Latte Art Championship 2020 leads to the World Latte Art Championship which will be held on 18-20 June 2020 in Warsaw, Poland.

The 2020 prize pack will include flights and accommodation to the World Latte Art Championship 2020.

The Championship will be held in strict accordance to the World Latte Art Rules and Regulations, NZ Code of Conduct and NZ Champions Terms and Conditions and other rules pertaining to the event.

Event Overview

The NZ Latte Art Championship 2020 highlights artistic expression in a competition platform that challenges the barista in an on-demand performance.

The NZ Championship 2020 comprises two separate rounds: a preliminary round and a final round.

The preliminary round will take place on stage eight (8) minutes, where two identical free-pour lattes and two identical designer lattes are produced.

The highest-scoring six competitors will compete in the final round entirely on stage ten (10) minutes. In final of this championship, the baristas present two identical samples of ‘art in a cup’ for three different beverages: two separate sets of matching free pour lattes and one set of matching designer pattern lattes (which may incorporate etching, or similar techniques, and surface decoration).

The first two pours will be made only with a pitcher of milk. The designer latte can be made with any surface aid at the choice of the barista. To ensure that the presented art is what the barista intends to deliver, the judges will be given a photo of the intended design prior to the start of the presentation. Artistic impressions of the design are allowed alongside the image (photo) but the photo shall be the point of reference to the judges scoring.

The beverages will be judged immediately for visual attributes, creativity, identical patterns in the pairs, the contrast in the patterns, and the baristas overall performance.

Event Overview Structure

This competition takes place over a day and consists of a preliminary round and a final round. Each competitor competes in the preliminary round, and then the top six will compete again in a finals round to determine the winner with the highest score, who becomes The New Zealand Latte Art Champion 2020. Please note that this is only a summary description of the event and that detailed structure and rules for this competition are set forth in and controlled by the Official Rules and Regulations.

------------------------------------

The World Barista Championship organisation (WBC) has licensed The New Zealand Specialty Coffee Association (NZSCA) to run the New Zealand Barista Championships from 2008 and into the future.

NZSCA is committed to running the event in close accordance with WBC standards. Our focus is on producing a field of finalists capable of competing successfully at an international level, and of course, a winner who can excel at the world finals.

If you are keen to compete there are a few things you should consider. Running to the WBC standards is time-consuming and means we can put only 20 contestants through in a day. In the event that there are more than 20 entrants for the championship, we will conduct a selection process, awarding entry to those competitors we consider best able to excel in competition conditions. This means the information entrants provide us at the time of entry is particularly important, to help us make a sound selection.
